Julia Fiona Roberts is the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus, and Walter Grady Roberts. She was born on 28 October 1967 in Atlanta. Roberts belongs to the Robertses' fourth generation to live in the Atlanta region, beginning from her maternal grandfather John Pendleton Roberts a farmer. The Robertses' father was interested in the theatre at a young age. In 1952, while an undergraduate at Emory University, he performed in a variety of productions in Atlanta. While stationed at Biloxi the Mississippi state, he was given the role of a soldier for the play of Betty Lou Bredemus. The two married in 1955. Their first child Eric Anthony was born in 1956. In 1957 the couple left the military and Walter began his studies at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter started working at Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. Walter along with Betty Lou started production in 1964 on the local Saturday morning children's television program Bum Bum and His Buddies, which they funded themselves. In 1964, Walter and Betty Lou founded their own organization called the Actors and Writers Workshop. The organization lasted for a total of six years. They had two more daughters Lelisa (called Lisa) Billingsley in 1965, and Julia (called Julie) in 1967.
